Considering breast reconstruction and pregnancy – some things to consider
Chances are, if you have breast reconstruction surgery you may not be able to breast feed your baby. Sometimes, it can also take a couple of years for the nerve endings in your nipples to repair so that sensation is returned.
So if you are considering breast reconstruction, and also considering pregnancy, it is imperative that you find out as much information as you can before hand. Your doctor will be the first place to start; they are sure to have some excellent information to get you started. Also, a breast reconstruction surgeon will be able to let you know if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Your physical condition and medical history are the core of the assessment.
Based on the outcome, your reconstruction procedure may have to be postponed until your have had your child, and it is past the breast feeding stage. Also bare in mind that while the surgery is quick and recovery time is limited, you may not be able to pick up your child, or any other weight, until your recovery is well underway.
