Jarretta Hamilton, a fourth grade teacher was fired by her school authorities after she declared that she was pregnant and requested maternity leave. She had filed a lawsuit against the Christian School Headmaster who felt that the act was against the moral code of conduct followed by the Institution. A recent Supreme Court decision acknowledging an exception to anti discrimination laws for Churches was cited as an example and this led the pregnant lady to argue that she was being victimized as her leave would cause inconvenience to the School.
The US securities and Exchange Commission has outlined the different areas where the terms and conditions of employment should not be affected in any manner by age, gender, race, national origin, disability or state of being pregnant or incapacitated by deficiencies, etc as that would amount to discrimination in the workplace. In the above case, stringent anti-discrimination laws can help the pregnant victim to get some relief.
Hamilton broke the news of her being pregnant to the authorities of the Christian School in St. Cloud and the Principal, Jon Ennis took the decision to fire her as her premarital pregnant state would fail to set the correct example on students , parents, school faculty and the citizens of Southland alike. Strong religious beliefs have been said to influence this decision.
